This README file contains the information you will need to access the electronic guide file, MTT001.PDF, located on the root directory. This guide acts as the main menu by providing the links to view, navigate, search, download, and print all data on the disc. Some sections in this README refer to the Sony Smartlink Plug-in that is used specifically with the Master Index of the MTT Digital Archive CD-ROM collection. This plug-in will only activate with the use of the Master Index. If you are using the MTTOO1.PDF electronic guide, this plug-in does not apply. Additional information on the features and use of the Master Index plus the Sony Smartlink Plug-in can be found in the README.TXT file on the root of MASTER_IDX1. ========================================================== Contents ========================================================== Section 1. To verify what version of the Reader you have installed, launch Reader, select "About Acrobat Reader..." from the "Help" menu. When the splash screen displays, the version number of Acrobat Reader is displayed in the top left corner of the splash screen. It must be 3.01 or greater. In order to take full advantage of the CD-ROM's capabilities, you must use a version of Acrobat Reader that includes the "Search" plug-in. This enables full-text searching across documents contained in this collection. The "Search" plug-in is included in the Adobe Acrobat Reader 3.01 installation on this CD-ROM. ---------------------------------------------------------- Verification for "SEARCH" ---------------------------------------------------------- If you already have Acrobat Reader installed on your system, and you would like to maximize the usefulness of this CD-ROM, you will want to verify that you have the "Search" plug-in installed. This can be accomplished by launching Reader and checking either the Acrobat Reader Toolbar for the "Search" icon (binoculars with a piece of paper in the background) or by dropping down the Tools menu and looking for the "Search" menu item. If these options exist, "Search" is installed. If you do not have these options, you may want to proceed with one of the following: 1. Go to Adobe's website, www.adobe.com, to see if "Search" is available for your version of Reader. If it is, install according to their instructions. 2. Install Acrobat Reader according to the instructions in Section 2 of this README. "Search" will automatically be installed with Adobe Acrobat Reader 3.0. 3. Use this CD without having "Search" capabilities. ---------------------------------------------------------- Sony Smartlink Plug-in for Adobe Acrobat Reader (For use with the Master Index in the MTT Digital Archive) ---------------------------------------------------------- The Sony Smartlink Plug-in is used for links across the CD-ROMs in this collection. Steps for Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows NT users: 1. Go to the INSTALL\WIN\32BIT\PLUG_INS folder on the MTT001 CD-ROM. 2. Copy the file, smlnk32.api, to the Plug_ins folder on your hard drive. This is typically located in C:\Acrobat3\Reader\Plug_ins. 3. Remove the "Read-Only" attribute from the smlnk32.api file. This can be accomplished by right mouse clicking on the smlnk32.api file in Explorer or My Computer. Choose the "Properties" menu item. Uncheck the "Read-Only" attribute and click the "OK" button. Steps for Macintosh Power PC users: This version of the plug-in is for use only when viewing the MTT Digital Archive with the Master Index contents copied to your network hard drive or local hard drive. Do not use this plug-in if you are viewing the Master Index from your CD-ROM drive. This plug-in supports Acrobat 3.01 and 4.0 on the Macintosh OS 8.1 and 8.5. Appleshare Network protocol is also supported. In Acrobat Reader, the "Display cross-linked documents in same window" under File/Preferences/General must be enabled. 1. Copy the file, Smartlink_PPC located in Install:Mac:Plugin 2. Paste the file to the following folder Hard drive:Acrobat Reader 3.01:plug-ins Note: Currently the plug-in is only available for Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT and Macintosh Power PC and is to be used with Reader 3.01 or greater. Other users are limited to browsing the abstracts on this CD-ROM or by using the stand-alone electronic guides on the individual collection CD-ROMs. See "Accessing Articles without the Sony Smartlink Plug-in" in Section 3 for details. ========================================================== Section 3. Using Features ========================================================== We recommend viewing the Getting Started section provided in MTT001.PDF to familiarize yourself with the navigation and tools used by the electronic guide and Acrobat Reader. In addition, the Acrobat Reader Online Guide also provides essential information. For information on the features and use of the Master Index, please see the README.TXT file on the root of MASTER_IDX1. ----------------------------------------------------------- Navigating ----------------------------------------------------------- When viewing an article, there are three methods of returning to the electronic guide. * Select File/Close on the menu bar (or click on the close icon). * Click (as needed) on the Previous Link button located on the Acrobat tool bar. * Use the Window selection on the menu bar (File/MTT001.PDF). By default, Reader 3.0 will open linked documents in the same window, which closes the previous document automatically. Therefore, if you select to view (link to) a document from MTT001.PDF, MTT001.PDF will close and the document will be opened in the same window. MTT001.PDF will have to be opened again to find other documents, etc. RECOMMENDATION: Turn the cross-document feature off so that linked documents will open in their own window, leaving MTT001.PDF open. To turn this feature off: (1) Select Preferences / General from the File menu. (2) Click on "Open cross-document links in same window" to deselect the cross-document feature ("X" disappears in check box). Then use the Windows menu to navigate among multiple open files. ----------------------------------------------------------- Searching ----------------------------------------------------------- To learn about the full capabilities of this Search tool, please reference the Getting Started section, accessed via START.PDF. An Online guide is also available: * For Windows, choose Plug-In Help/Using Acrobat Search from the Help menu. * For Macintosh, see SEARCH.PDF in the Help folder in the installed Acrobat Reader 3.01 folder. * For UNIX, see READ.TAR. ========================================================== Section 4. CD-ROM Information ========================================================== This material was published using Adobe(TM) Acrobat(TM) technology to create portable document format (PDF) files. This CD-ROM is in ISO 9660 format. Included on this disc are versions of Acrobat Reader + Search 3.0 for Microsoft Windows(R) (3.x, 95, 98 and NT), Apple Macintosh, and UNIX [AIX(R), IRIX, HP_UX(TM), Solaris(R), and SunOS]. ----------------------------------------------------------- Optical Character Recognition ----------------------------------------------------------- The PDFs contained on this CD-ROM were created using Acrobat Capture search technology, either by scanning printed pages or by converting electronic files. In the scanning process, the actual printed pages of the documentation are scanned to create both an image of each page as well as optical character recognition (OCR) data. What you see on your computer monitor or on the page that you print through Acrobat Reader is a rendering of the image, while the OCR data is used behind the scenes for search purposes. Since some images may have been generated from printed pages, the quality may not be as good as when input is from digital sources. In many cases, greater than 100 percent magnification is required to read documents online. Pages printed at 100 percent magnification are easy to read, however. Image quality will also vary depending on the resolution of your monitor. To improve the quality of the image, try activating the option Smooth text and Monochrome Images found in the Acrobat Reader under File/Preferences/General menu. Note: This may effect screen refresh speed. See Troubleshooting Tip below. The accuracy of the image on your screen or of the printed page should mirror the accuracy of the original page. When you conduct full-text searches, however, the results will vary. Characters that are not recognized successfully during the OCR process are bitmapped, and words containing such characters cannot be searched successfully. They also cannot be copied and printed into word processing software pages without some loss of data. ========================================================== Section 5. Troubleshooting ========================================================== Q: When I print a document, some of the text is cut off. A: Select Shrink to Fit under File/Print. This will capture the entire image on to your print out. Q: (Macintosh users) When I do a search, I get a message "An internal error has occurred. Can't retrieve the results. Sorry." A: This is a known Adobe problem. It occurs when a search is conducted on a group of files in which the first 64 characters of some titles are identical. Because this is such a large collection of papers, some paper titles begin identically. Please see Help/Plug-In Help/Using Acrobat Search to narrow the search parameters and avoid this from happening. Q: Screen refresh and printing takes an extraordinarily long time on my system. A: Under File/Preferences/General, turn off the option for Smooth Text & Monochrome Images. Q: When I open the file for the guide, I only get part of the opening image. For example, I see bookmarks on the left hand side of the screen, but nothing on the right. A: You are using an earlier version of Adobe Acrobat Reader. Install Adobe Acrobat Reader + Search 3.01from this CD (see Section 2. Installation Instructions). ========================================================== ========================================================== This CD-ROM was produced by Sony Electronic Publishing Services.
